                                       Veilside Supra

Road & Track magazine did a short story about the Veilside Supra in March 1995. The Veilside Supra received the Grand Prize for Design at the 1994 Tokyo auto salon ( a gigantic show for Japan's aftermarket tuners). The car featured in R&T produced 540 hp @ 5,850 rpm and 407 LB-ft of torque @ 4,700. Quarter mile times were said to be 13.7 seconds with a top speed of 197 mph. No prices were quoted in the article.

Vielside EvolutionEVOLUTION Veilside

The Evolution Veilside Supra produces 680 hp on 1.7 bar boost. It did the quarter in 12.9 ( On a Wet Track. ) and had a top speed of 325km/h. In fact, in a drag race staged on a Japanese TV show, the Veilside was FASTER to 325 than an F40. Cool stuff.

Some differences in the Evolution model was a kevlar tailgate, that had a lower deck, and much smaller glass area (think of the "tunnel and buttress" design of the back of an MR2, and it's kinda like that), and Evolution models I think, did not come with targa top. The car ran Ohlins shocks and 800/600lbs springs, TRD LSD, and was apparently set up by ex-F1 driver Eric Van Der Poele. The car is a two seater, with the rear bench carpeted.

Some drive impressions on the Japanese TV show seem (I can't speak Japanese) to suggest that it's a bit uncontrollable, with boost that comes on like a lightswitch, easily spinning the wheels when the boost kicks on in third. Still, it lapped Tsukuba International Raceway in the same time as the F40.

(ed note: The following is a reader's f ollow-up to the above:)

Concerning the evolution Supra,

I own a copy of the show that you mention (called Best Motoring) and have a few remarks:

1) The 12.9 quarter mile time indicated on the show was reached on a WET TRACK! Also, if you watch carefully, you can see the driver spinning the tires for what seems like an eternity. My own Supra ran a 12.8 with not nearly as much HP, so one can imagine what the Veilside is capable of on a dry track.

2) Concerning the test drive impressions, the driver was saying that Evolution Supra was quite docile. (The voice-over guy says,"EH??? Docile???) The driver goes on to say that the Supra is docile until the boost kicks in, at which point the car becomes a "beast".

Cheers,
Lance
